ATI Radeon HD 4200 Series Driver and CCC2 Fix for Windows 8

After much research on this issue I am pleased to say I found a fix that works. This method may also work for other ATI radeon HD cards as well. Follow these instructions closely and be sure not to deviate to much from them.

I just installed Windows 8 Release Preview on my laptop, and as expected I stumbled upon driver incompatibilities.
My laptop (Toshiba Satellite) runs on a ATI Mobility Radeon 4200 series and like everybody else I got a lot of graphic bugs in most of the games I tried running.
The problem of course lies with Microsoft's preinstalled drivers witch do not seem to work as they should. In order to fix this you must install older display drivers witch of course you can't because window's won't let you( the stock ones keep reinstalling automatically). After spinning my head I came up with this few simple steps to overwrite Microsoft's stock drivers. It may seem a little complicated at first but trust me if you follow the step's you are as good as you can be

Step 1: Make sure you have the older graphics drivers (the ones that you are sure they work).Unpack them somewhere on your HDD for later use(don't install just unpack, the idea is to have access to the .inf files for your driver)

Step 2: Open Device Manager (Control Panel) & locate your display adapter (you should see some Microsoft's stock drivers installed here)

Step 3: Right click "properties" and go to "events" tab. Here you should see a list of the latest events (which driver installed & when). Search for the file that has the .inf extension ( in my case it was "atiilhag.inf").

Step 4: Go to C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository (this is where Microsoft stores all the default drivers for windows) and search for the file you found earlier (using windows search).Once you found it open the folder that contains the file & copy it to another location (for backup purposes). This file contains information about which driver to install (open it and look around you should see information on the driver version and other stuff we don't need).

Step 5: Go to the folder where you unpacked your older drivers( the ones that work). There you should see alot of files and folders. Here you must search for the location of the .inf files (mine were located in a folder named "Packages", but it may differ from software provider to provider). The goal is to locate the .inf file for your older driver. Once you found it open it, it should be almost the same as the one you found in the driver repository folder earlier( the driver version will differ of course) but probably it will have a different name. Rename this file to match the .inf file from windows and copy it to the folder where where you found Microsoft's .inf file (in the Driver Repository).

Step 6: Go back to device manager and uninstall the current display driver (right click: uninstall). This should switch your screen resolution to a lower one(so you know the driver got uninstalled). After this right click any item in the device manager and click "scan for hardware changes". This will refresh your hardware list and a new item will apear (your graphics card, marked as unknown device. Right click it and select "update driver software" select "browse my computer" and browse to the folder where you unpacked your older graphic's driver (the folder where you found your.inf file). It should now install your older display driver without any problems.

Hope this will help somebody, I tried to be as explicit as I could.

!!!!! Please note not to use the setup exe to install the graphics software for the video driver. When you unpack the exe file, follow these steps but do not click the install button, just hit cancel. This will mean that you've extracted the files but have not installed the driver or software. Once you have used these steps to get the driver working, go to C:AMDSupport12-6-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc_whqlPackagesApps Some locations for others may vary but this is where mine was located.
Next go to CCC2 and then Core-static folder where at the bottom a windows installer package named ccc-core-static will be. Run this to get software working for the driver you just installed. If you run the original installer without manually installing the software it will automatically install the sample driver again and your work will be lost. !!!!!!!!!

Follow these steps for the driver, go into AMD folder and manually install the driver software and you will have control over your graphics performance, such as MIP details and 3d settings as well as Fullscreen stretching in lower resolutions which is ideal for gaming performance.

I've done this and now I'm happily using windows 8 again

Hello,

I'm having a problem that I can't enable Aero after installing my brand new ATI Radeon HD 4870. I've looked at a bunch of forums and every time someone suggests something, I've tried it to no avail. I've updated to the latest drivers and control center, but I'm not sure if there's some setting I need to change to get it working again. Can anyone help? (I've also tried to re-enable it under Desktop>Personalize>Windows Color and Appearance and Themes, but again no go. Doesn't even show up as an option.)

Thanks,
Chris

Introduction
As we roll into the end of September which marks a few things like the end of the third quarter, the start of the new HD 6000 series coming, a new Catalyst driver suite and what could be an end to NVIDIAs very short reign on the mid range video card market, we find ourselves excited about October.
From next month onward we should begin to see what we really only know at this point as "Bart", being offered from AMD. I've been practicing the whole AMD thing, trying to get ATI out of my vocabulary, as no doubt the release of the HD 6000 series will almost mean the end of the ATI name, a name we've grown to love (and sometimes hate).
That's next month, though, which will mark the release of the always weird sounding .10 driver; in this case, the 10.10. For now we've got the new 10.9 driver. Let’s see what AMD are offering us and then get straight into the benchmarks.

The Catalyst 10.3 drivers are really weird this month. What tends to happen is that we'll get the driver a few days before it goes up live on the ATI website. Once it goes live then we release our performance analysis comparing the latest version to the previous one.
This time around, though, it seems that ATI have ants in the pants and can't keep still because they chose to release a preview driver of the 10.3s which is essentially the driver you're going to see, except it’s non-WHQL. In saying that, the WHQL driver will miss Eyefinity 6 updates and an Alien vs. Predator optimization. We're sure the 10.4s will include those updates, though.
Below is the full listing of new features and performance improvements you'll see in the 10.3s. Let's just let the list do the talking.

New Features
ATI Catalyst Mobility - monthly updates for the mobile crowd
ATI Eyefinity Technology Bezel Correction - compensate for your bezels so objects in your game move from one display to the other smoothly
ATI Eyefinity Technology Per Display Control - adjust for differences in each individual displays brightness, color and contrast
ATI Eyefinity Technology Multiple Display Groups - more display groups to give further control of your desktop with three displays or more connected
ATI Eyefinity Technology Display Configuration Switching - easily switch from one display mode to another
3D Stereoscopic 3D driver hooks - enables 3rd party middleware vendors to bring more 3D stereoscopic gaming options

If someone could please help verify these points because I bought a new AlienWare PC from Dell and my understanding I was ordering a Single ATI Radeon HD 5970, 2GB GDDR5 video card that would only accommodate one DVI connected monitor so the single monitor would be able to consume the entire 2GB GDDR5. But the card has two DVI connectors which means that it is only using 1024 MB per connection. DELL is trying to convince me that this is a Single ATI Radeon HD 5970, 2GB GDDR5 video card and it will meet my needs.

I keep telling them that a dual connection card is not what I ordered. I wanted a a single DVI connected monitor using 2GB GDDR5.

I contacted AMD to ask about the card, but they have not replied.
I need some experts help to clarify these points:

Single ATI Radeon HD 5970, 2GB GDDR5 - This card should only have one DVI connector that uses the 2GB of RAM. The Single referring to the number of connectors.

Dual 2GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5970 CrossfireX Enabled - this card would have two DVI connectors.

Thanks.

Hello all! I have been trying to fix a 64-bit Windows 7 Professional workstation in a domain environment. Basic system info listed below:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.System Model: OptiPlex 580BIOS: BIOS Date: 06/19/12 14:12:07 Ver: 0.07 A07Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 B55 Processor (2 CPUs), ~3.0GHzDisplay: ATI Radeon HD 4200Memory: 4096MB RAMAvailable OS Memory: 3836MB RAMPage File: 1613MB used, 6058MB availableNetwork Cards: 3 Installed
[01]: Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet[02]: Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter[03]: Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

This PC is two years old and essentially started to crash out of the box. I put up with it for about a year-and-a-half because the crashes were somewhat infrequent, maybe occuring every two to three weeks. About three months ago I had become fed up with the crashes and purchased a software support contract with Dell. Although I had performed multiple diagnostic tests on my own to search for hardware failure (never found any issues), they made me rerun those same tests to prove there were no hardware issues. After the diagnostics came back clean, they told me I would have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows (which had come installed OEM). The good folks at Dell assured me this would be the only fix, and while I did not really agree with them, I complied with their suggestion.

Well, despite following their instructions, the PC in question continues to experience the occasional BSOD after reformatting. So whatever Dell thought the cause/cure would be, reinstalling Windows was not the answer to the problem. I'm not sure if this is a driver issue, or something completely different. When I run bugchecks on the Dump Files, the results typically state that the crashes were probably caused by Ntfs.sys, ntkrnlmp.exe, and win32k.sys.

Last weekend I ran memtest86+ for about 16 hours, checking each individual memory stick in each slot for 8+ passes, but no errors were found. I ran Driver Verifier for several days straight (still running it now) but could not crash the PC while stressing the third party drivers. If I can't isolate a hardware or a driver issue, then what exactly could be causing this? I have just about had it with this PC, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

One more thing I forgot to add; I did receive some advice to update the video driver a few weeks ago. I used a program called Driver Fusion from Treexy to remove all the AMD components from the PC that I could. I then downloaded a more recent version of the ATI
Radeon HD 4200 display driver v 8.970.100.3000, released 07/2012 (my previous version was v 8.850.0.0, released 04/2011). However, the PC has crashed 3 or 4 times since. So although it was probably a good idea to update the video driver, this alone was not enough to fix the issue.
