Hi guys,
I come back to you after some time away in a happy place where tech support is never needed, once again humbly requesting your expertise.

When my laptop hinge busted, I salvaged the HDD and decided to mount it in my next desktop build and use it until I bought another HDD to sell it with. This drive was partitioned with a dual boot of Win7pro64 and Backtrack 5r1 64, both were pretty well maintained, no foreseeable issues with swapping the drive, right?

Well, we seem to be having some technical difficulty, on both fronts. As this is sevenforums, Ill restrict this to my Windows 7 issues, but for any bilingual folks out there that are interested, I'm posting the other half of the dilemma on linuxquestions, sparing them the windows part of it lol. Ill add a link to it once its up.

Okay so here is the hardware setup I am working with.

Asus M5A97 mobo, amd970/sb950 chipset, is rated to support all components
AMD FX-8120 CPU Black Edition
16 GB G-Skill Sniper pc3-12800 ram
XFX nVidia GeForce 6800GT 256MB GDDR3 (I can hear your snickering )
Raidmax 630w PSU
Samsung Supermulti Optical
WD Scorpio Black Laptop SATA HDD

Everything listed is brand new, purchased online, save for the HDD of course. The video card was purchased used at the local computer shop, last-minute.

So just let me explain the nvidia card real fast I planned this build assuming my old HD3870 would work just fine, but it went out on me almost right away. I had it hookup up to a coby tv with a 1366x768 resolution, which is what the nvidia card is powering now as well, via DVI-I output to a DVI to HDMI adapter, then through an HDMI-HDMI cable to the tv, same as the HD3870 was (in case any of that proves relevant). My original intention was to leave this setup open for crossfire if I found another 3800 series. I should note that while the HD 3870 was working, I had booted it up alright and gotten to the boot animation for Windows 7 once. It then proceeded to reboot, after which my video card was toast and I could not get a successful POST. Now that the card is changed, here is what I am experiencing.

When I boot up, I get a POST beep, I go into the BIOS, everything is looking tip top. I select the HDD, everythings still going fine. Since I am running a dual-boot configuration, GRUB is my boot manager. I select the Windows 7 Boot Loader, and I have the option to run startup repair or try to boot normally. I tried the startup repair a few times. The first time it said attempting repairs, then said it would reboot and either boot successfully or continue startup repair. It does not boot up fine, in fact, I get a BSOD. I try the startup repair again, only for it to tell me the problem couldnt be fixed automatically. Well it gives me two options, to either view advanced details in a log file of some sort, or to log in to a user account to run some diagnostic utilities.

The log shows no errors of any kind - I went through each instance of startup repair and they were all negative for each category. There was one "root cause" listed for each attemp which said that 'a recent hardware change' may have caused this to happen. I was told by my college professor who holds an advanced certification for Windows 7 that you could swap a Windows HDD to another computer, and all that would happen is most hardware would default to Windows generic drivers, and you would have some short window of time to reactivate Windows within, due to some sort of built in anti-piracy feature throwing up red flags at the substantial hardware change. Have I been ill-informed, or do I have bigger problems than that?

I logged into my administrative account and the options provided are as follows: Startup Repair, System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and the Command Prompt.
Startup Repair just fails and loops me back, System Restore can't find any restore points (very odd), and System Image Recovery is unusable for me since I never made a backup image. I ran the memory diagnostic as well as chkdsk /f, as advised, and neither found any errors. Selecting the Commant Prompt option, my working directiory is x:windowssystem32. I can switch over to c:, and I can access all of my files, personal, applications, and system alike, which appear to be intact (much of this I have verified via examination from my Backtrack/Linux partition).

Well, I've taken the Windows 7 course, and I don't want to screw around with finding the perpetrator behind my misfortune if I don't have to - I'll just do a side by side install, throw everything on c: into the "Windows.Old" folder, and get the ball rolling on re-crafting my setup, followed by some housecleaning. I have my original product key, all I have to do is pop in that install disc, right? Save the day? I could not have been more wrong.

I actually get a blue screen error while booting from the install disc. This is burnt with an iso obtained from MSDNAA, a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, the SP1 Debug Rollup. It's what I used to install the Windows 7 that is currently failing that I'd used for well over a year, and the Windows 7 on another machine I'd built. The serial is registered to me and it was all free through my college. When I did my second install, upon activation I asked if I would need to request a new serial since this one had been used, and was told NO, that my serial is MSDNAA specific, usable as many times as I'd like for academic purposes. You cannot even retrieve these from the system using means that would otherwise produce the correct key - it will come back as five sets of five B's. These are the only two times it has been used and this most definitely does not count as a third since it is the same OS, HDD, owner, serial, and disc even.

Circling back to the BSOD, the interesting thing to me is that the exact same blue screen error comes up while booting my Windwos partition as while attempting to boot from CD to reinstall. Is that significant? I know the terminology sort of clumps them all into the same category, but surely there is a correlation, no? I thought perhaps I was going crazy, and Windows had set some bit switch on the HDD that says "Help, I'm supposed to be in a laptop!" but this does not explain the CD.

I have tried to boot into safe mode, have tried Automatic System Recovery (which im given to understand is the same as Startup Repair), but no cigar. ASR behaves as startup repair did and safe mode = bsod. I have attached a picture of the error screen for reference. I have a copy of Ultimate Boot CD for Windows on my USB drive, but there is a plethora of utils and I dont know how to use most of them. If there is a specific tool that could remedy the issue or shed some light on the situation, I can certainly collect info and report back.

Hi, I am trying to browse data on my buffaloo NAS device but can't. When Vista came out I had the same problem and the resolution was to set something in security policies (NLTM). I've had a look in Windows 7 Local Security Policy / security options and have been unable to find a similiar setting to change.

I get a Logon failure:unknown user name or bad password
Tried setting Allow all outgoing on Restrict NTLMutgoig NTLM trafficto remove servers

Internet access, shares to Windows home server work fine.

Anyone any thoughts?




When you have a Ferrari you might want to test drive it on a circuit, where there are none of the limitations of a town street. Well, when you have Internet Explorer 9 Beta you need a “circuit” on which to test it, something more than just your average Internet websites, applications and services.

Somewhere where you could really go “pedal to the metal” on IE9. Where the browser will show just what it is capable of.

Fortunately enough, a wide range of such sites designed for Internet Explorer 9 already exist, with a plethora of Microsoft partners introducing new IE9-related web projects with the launch of the Beta on September 15th, 2010.

The Beauty of the Web launch event for IE9 Beta earlier this week was a real show of force from Microsoft partners.

At the bottom of the screen I included a range of photos from the partner section of the event. Below you will also be able to find a list of links with some amazing IE9 websites from the software giant’s Beauty of the Web event.

“Richer Web experiences can blend into the consumer's desktop experience comfortably and consistently. So, today we have an A to Z, literally, of Web sites, partners, live with Web experiences that take advantage of IE9, even more than the A to Z of the Web,” revealed Dean Hachamovitch, Corporate Vice President, Internet Explorer, Microsoft earlier this week.

Users will be able to easily notice that IE9 can enhance the experiences associated with social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Netlog.

But there is additional bleeding edge content from various web design firms, and new perspectives on entertainment and news from BBC, CNN, Hulu, Vimeo, and Daily Motion.

Over 50 projects were on display in total, many of them built in very short time, just a matter of weeks, in preparation for the event.

But all of them extremely impressive, and all of them already live on the web, and available to testers around the world.

It’s important to underline that although the Redmond company catalyzed the creation of the projects, it made sure to have them work not only across Internet Explorer 9, but also across rival browsers.

Superb projects such as Endless Mural will function in IE9, as well as any other browser that supports HTML5.

All the websites featured at the Beauty of the web event in fact, are set up to take advantage of modern web standards, such as HTML5, CSS3, SVG, etc.

And usage is in no way restricted to IE9, which is a brilliant move from Microsoft, showing its commitment to users, developers and partners alike, and a strong focus on driving the web forward by making the same markup vision a reality.

A Domain Name Server (DNS) Amplification attack is a popular form of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) that relies on the use of publically accessible open recursive DNS servers to overwhelm a victim system with DNS response traffic. Description

A Domain Name Server (DNS) Amplification attack is a popular form of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) that relies on the use of publically accessible open recursive DNS servers to overwhelm a victim system with DNS response traffic. The basic attack technique consists of an attacker sending a DNS name lookup request to an open recursive DNS server with the source address spoofed to be the victim’s address. When the DNS server sends the DNS record response, it is sent instead to the victim. Because the size of the response is typically considerably larger than the request, the attacker is able to amplify the volume of traffic directed at the victim. By leveraging a botnet to perform additional spoofed DNS queries, an attacker can produce an overwhelming amount of traffic with little effort. Additionally, because the responses are legitimate data coming from valid servers, it is especially difficult to block these types of attacks.While the attacks are difficult to prevent, network operators can implement several possible mitigation strategies. The primary element in the attack that is the focus of an effective long-term solution is the detection and elimination of open recursive DNS resolvers. These systems are typically legitimate DNS servers that have been improperly configured to respond to recursive queries on behalf of any system, rather than restricting recursive responses only to requests from local or authorized clients. By identifying these systems, an organization or network operator can reduce the number of potential resources that the attacker can employ in an attack.

A misconfigured Domain Name System (DNS) server can be exploited to participate in a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.
Solution

DETECTION

Several organizations offer free, web-based scanning tools that will search a network for vulnerable open DNS resolvers.  These tools will scan entire network ranges and list the address of any identified open resolvers.

Open DNS Resolver Project

The Open DNS Resolver Project has compiled a list of DNS servers that are known to serve as globally accessible open resolvers.  The query interface allows network administrators to enter IP ranges in CIDR format [1].

The Measurement Factory
http://dns.measurement-factory.com
Like the Open DNS Resolver Project, the Measurement Factory maintains a list of Internet accessible DNS servers and allows administrators to search for open recursive resolvers [2].  In addition, the Measurement Factory offers a free tool to directly test an individual DNS resolver to determine if it allows open recursion.  This will allow an administrator to determine if configuration changes are necessary and verify that configuration changes have been effective [3].  Finally, the site offers statistics showing the number of open resolvers detected on the various Autonomous System (AS) networks, sorted by the highest number found [4].

DNSInspect

Another freely available, web-based tool for testing DNS resolvers is DNSInspect.  This site is similar to The Measurement Factory’s ability to test a specific resolver for vulnerability, but offers the ability to test an entire DNS Zone for several other potential configuration and security issues [5].
Indicators

In a typical recursive DNS query, a client sends a query request to a local DNS server requesting the resolution of a name or the reverse resolution of an IP address.  The DNS server performs the necessary queries on behalf of the client and returns a response packet with the requested information or an error [6, page 21].  The specification does not allow for unsolicited responses.  In a DNS amplification attack, the key indicator is a query response without a matching request.  
MITIGATION

Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming traffic volume that can be produced by one of these attacks, there is often little that the victim can do to counter a large-scale, DNS amplification-based distributed denial-of-service attack.  While the only effective means of eliminating this type of attack is to eliminate open recursive resolvers, this requires a large-scale effort by numerous parties.  According to the Open DNS Resolver Project, of the 27 million known DNS resolvers on the Internet, approximately “25 million pose a significant threat” of being used in an attack [1].  However, several possible techniques are available to reduce the overall effectiveness of such attacks to the Internet community as a whole.  Where possible, configuration links have been provided to assist administrators with making the recommended changes.  The configuration information has been limited to BIND9 and Microsoft’s DNS Server, which are two widely deployed DNS servers.  If you are running a different DNS server, please see your vendor’s documentation for configuration details.
Source IP Verification

Because the DNS queries being sent by the attacker-controlled clients must have a source address spoofed to appear as the victim’s system, the first step to reducing the effectiveness of DNS amplification is for Internet Service Providers to deny any DNS traffic with spoofed addresses.  The Network Working Group of the Internet Engineering Task Force released a Best Current Practice document in May 2000 that describes how an Internet Service Provider can filter network traffic on their network to drop packets with source addresses not reachable via the actual packet’s path [7].  This configuration change would considerably reduce the potential for most current types of DDoS attacks.
Disabling Recursion on Authoritative Name Servers

Many of the DNS servers currently deployed on the Internet are exclusively intended to provide name resolution for a single domain.  These systems do not need to support resolution of other domains on behalf of a client, and therefore should be configured with recursion disabled.
Bind9

Add the following to the global options [8]:
options {
     allow-query-cache { none; };
     recursion no;
};
Microsoft DNS Server

In the Microsoft DNS console tool [9]:

Right-click the DNS server and click Properties.Click the Advanced tab.In Server options, select the “Disable recursion” check box, and then click OK.
Limiting Recursion to Authorized Clients

For DNS servers that are deployed within an organization or ISP to support name queries on behalf of a client, the resolver should be configured to only allow queries on behalf of authorized clients.  These requests should typically only come from clients within the organization’s network address range.
BIND9

In the global options, add the following [10]:
acl corpnets { 192.168.1.0/24; 192.168.2.0/24; };
options {
  allow-query { corpnets; };
  allow-recursion { corpnets; };
};
Microsoft DNS Server

It is not currently possible to restrict recursive DNS requests to a specific client address range in Microsoft DNS Server.  The most effective means of approximating this functionality is to configure the internal DNS server to forward queries to an external DNS server and restrict DNS traffic in the firewall to restrict port 53 UDP traffic to the internal server and the external forwarder [11].
Rate Limiting Response of Recursive Name Servers

There is currently an experimental feature available as a set of patches for BIND9 that allows an administrator to restrict the number of responses per second being sent from the name server [12].  This is intended to reduce the effectiveness of DNS amplification attacks by reducing the volume of traffic coming from any single resolver.
BIND9

On BIND9 implementation running the RRL patches, add the following lines to the options block of the authoritative views [13]:

};
Microsoft DNS Server

This option is currently not available for Microsoft DNS Server.

My mother (84 years old) is visually impaired (legally blind) and has been using audio books for a number of years.
Tapes (a format which is easy to use and pretty straight forward) are being phased in favor of audio files downloaded from the internet.

Mom has encountered some issues with the new technology: books are normally in MP3 format and must be 'read' using a music player like Windows Media Player.
Bookmarking is either non-existant or overly complex as this function is not a priority for media players. She is currently using Winamp, as it has a 'bookmark' feature,
but it's a fairly complex process when the user has problems seeing.

Mom still has some limited vision - she uses her computer (connected to a 40 inch LCD TV, resolution set to 800 X600) to find and download books,
Unfortunately, she remains tied to the computer to 'read' the books she has downloaded. We've tried a number of MP3 players but the screens and control are just too small.

Does anyone have any experience/recommendations about the current crop of e-book readers and whether or not they are suitable for the visually impaired?

What we are looking for:

1) Can books download in audio format or can the reader convert to audio and play the book?
ideally, conversion to audio hould be automatic, or very easy to do

2) Can the reader bookmark the audio file?

3) Must have easy to use controls (the larger the display and the buttons, the better)

4) user friendly - see restrictions above

5) broad format support.

6) reader is no larger than a regular hard-covered book - portability

7) battery life - longer is always better
