USB items working: Keyboard, Mouse, AverTV Hybrid tuner, UPS monitoring, Headset, and just about anything else
USB items not working: USB Sandisk and USB External Hard Drive (both tested as working fine in two other machines)

I do not often use the Sandisk or External Hard Drive and just recently needed to and discovered I'm getting the following when investigating from the device manager:

A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

All the properties characteristics for both devices look fine. From everything I can tell they should just simply work, as they had before ... but I'm getting a yellow exclamation point in the device manager and they are disabled.

I have plowed through quite a few 'try this' / 'try that' and find nothing that works so far. Particularly with Windows 7, all avenues seem to point to the OS Hardware Troubleshooter as the best way to fix such problems. Well, it simply is not being fixed by that.

The text of the code 32 suggest an alternate driver may be providing this functionality...... Huh?

I'm stumped at this point. I don't know where to go next. I thought I'd pass this by the community before I resort to re-installation of my OS (oh, I dread the thought).

I -do- use Acronis Backup and can restore back as far as a month ago, but I'd like to avoid that if I can. I would do a full back of the current state of the machine, then restore as far back in time as I can and work my way forward in time by restoring differential backups until I find the point where it all broke. This will take me a LOT of time.

Anyway, if anyone has ideas about how to repair this I'd love to hear them. Thanks ....

Hi,

I have win7 prof 64bit installed.
Motherboard Name: Asus P8H67
CPU Sockel: LGA1155
Audio: Realtek ALC887
nVIDIA HDMI/DP (4 times)

(In device manager: High Definition Audio Device (2x)
NVIDIA High Definition Audio (2x))

The problem:
When I tried to remove everything from my old 32bit AVerTV (SW & Drivers) and install a new one (AVerTV Volar HD Pro)
I suddenly realized that I don't have any sound any more.
In the device manager/sound, video & game controllers/.../properties I see everywhere
"A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)".

The device is enabled.
When I try to update the drivers it says they were up-to-date.

Under Control panel / Sound it reads with Playback and Recording:
"No audio devices are installed".

The Speaker icon on the taskbar is disabled.
The Media player plays videos without sound.
When I boot from a Linux CD I can hear sound (on Youtube) which means that the HW works properly.

Any Hints?
Thanks a lot

I have two external USB drives, one independently-powered, one USB-cable-powered, both with NTFS and linux ext2 and ext3 partitions. Under Windows7 both drives show up under Device Manager with the Property: "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)". None of their partitions show up in "My Computer".

(BTW, the partitions are all good and they are all usable from the linux side of my dualboot system.)

I probably disabled the guilty service(s) myself. To get Windows7 to work reasonably, I disabled all the services I thought I wouldn't need. Which service(s) do I have to look at to get the disks to work again?

The powered disk is a Hitachi HTS545016B9A300 and the unpowered one is the internal disk from my previous laptop, a "Seagate Desktop USB Device," both as reported by the Device Manager.

Thanks much for any assistance.

This is the 2nd time this has happened in about the last 2 months. I go to do a system backup and no USB drives are visible in My Computer. The USB HD I plugged in was recognized by the system and is visible in Device Manager and is working properly, but does not show up or open for use. I can see in Device Manager that under the Storage Volume heading that it is clicked open and 4 entries for Generic Volume have exclamation marks. Inside of the properties is this error message:

A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

I have not done any driver updates. I have tried uninstalling each item and they come back the same way. I have also done the hardware change scan. I am running Windows 7 64 bit HP and do not have any other issues with this PC.

The last time this happened, I reinstalled windows which I really do not want to do again. Any thoughts, thanks

My CD drive quit working. It's a Samsung CD-R/RW SW-248F. When I tried to uninstall and reinstall I got the following error message: A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternative driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32). How do I fix it? I have the installation CD but can't use it because the CD drive doesn't work.

I have two CD-ROM Drives, one is a Samsung SC-148C the other is a HP CD-Writer+300, Both drive letters have disappeared from Device Manager and My Computer. The HP Drive has a yellow exclamation point in Device Mgr and the Samsun doesn't show up at all.

When I right-clicked on the Samsun and selected properties, the following message appeared: A driver (services) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this Functionality. (Code 32). Click troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

I tried to roll back the driver but another message came up that said "No driver files have been backed up for this device." I then went to Services and selected automatic and started the "IMAPI CD-Burning Services to no avail.

I need to install a program via the CD-ROM as soon as I possibly can.

I need help getting my drives up and running again and I will appreciate any suggestions.

Gloria
