When I ran the Windows XP SP2 Hard Disk Error Checking Utility with the
"Automatically fix file system errors" box checked, I get an error message
that reads as follows:

"Checking Disk Local Disk (C"

"The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs
exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be
accessed only by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule this disk check
to occur the next time you restart the computer?"

When I rebooted and ran the utility again with nothing else running I got
the same error message. Then I used the Windows MSCONFIG utility and
disabled ALL startup programs. I then ran the utility and I got the same
error message.

When I ran the Windows XP SP2 Hard Disk Error Checking Utility with
"Automatically fix file system errors" box unchecked, the utility reported no
problems.

What is going on here? Any suggestions?

My question involves a wireless network, but since the question might also
apply to networks in general, I am posting it to the general network NG as
well.

I have two laptops, each with a PC card wireless card. I have successfully
(I think) created an ad hoc wireless connection between them. They both have
the same SSID, the "Wireless Network Connection" icon shows that they are
connected with excellent signal strength, etc. There is no WEP enabled, no
security.

I set up "Internet Connection Sharing", although I will not actually use
that, in case it is necessary. (I only have a dial-up connection, each
laptop has its built-in modem, there is no reason I would want to connect
one through the other's connection.)

What I do wish to be able to do is to transfer files between the two
computers wirelessly. I cannot seem to be able to get that to work.

Both computers run Windows XP Pro. One has been updated to SP2, the other is
running SP1, with all the latest patches other than SP2. I have Windows
Firewall turned off (while trying to set this up) on the SP computer, and
the anti-virus programs turned off on both.

On the root drives of both computers, file-sharing is enabled. Simple file
sharing is enabled on both computers.

When I open up "My Network Places" on either computer, I only see that
computer on it, not the other computer. If I click "Entire Network", then
"Microsoft Windows Network", then "Workgroup", on one of the computers I
still only see that same computer, not the other one. When I do that on the
other one, after clicking "Workgroup", I get an error message: "Workgroup is
not accessible.......The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available".

If I click on "Map Network Drives", I cannot see the other computer's drive
to be mapped, from either computer.

I have searched the web a lot to try to find a solution for this, the
Microsoft Knowledge Base, etc., tried different things, nothing has worked.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone here could help with this problem.
Thank you.

I have a network running XP Home on 3 laptops and 1 desktop. All computers
can use the internet and printers fine. One laptop (IBM) can share files with
the desktop but the other 2 laptops (both the same make etc) give the error
"The user has not been granted the required login type at this computer" when
I try to access them from the desktop or the IBM laptop.
All the references to this error message say to go to Control
PanelAdministrative ToolsLocal Settings but XP Home does not have this
option on any of my computers.
How do I set "Allow access from a Network' in XP Home?
Thanks for any help.

i have an external onetouch maxtor drive attached to my pc running XP home.

at bootup this morning, chkdsk was automatically executed against it. at
stage 2 (of 5) of the chkdsk process, immediately after issuing the
message "attempting to correct a minor error in file 451", chkdsk exits
with an unspecified error.

before chkdsk, the disk did have errors, but only relating to certain
directories (when attempting to access via explorer), while other
directories were fine. with chkdsk now failing in the middle of its
attempt to fix the problems, the entire disk is now inaccessible, while
the files that were still there are, most likely, still there, just not
reachable.

i located a problem within W2000 whereby chkdsk could exit with an
unspecified error when executing against disks 4G, but did not find any
information in this regard relating to XP.

anybody else aware of "unspecified error" message for chkdsk for XP home?
any ideas as to how to get around this problem so that the files still
resident can be extracted? ideally, i would simply like get the files
that are still good and then reformat the disk from the beginning and try
to make a clean start.

any thoughts/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

cheers,

richard boaz

Hi,
I have done this a few times using XP Home.

If you use Start Run "control userpasswrds2" to add a new user, it
prompts you to enter a username & password. You then click next, which
prompts you what type of user you would like it to be. I have previously
selected Power User & User.

An error message occurs saying that the user group specified could not be
found.

If you then select a different user group, it says that the user (that you
are in the process of creating) already has access to this system - or
something like that.

I then click cancel. and logoff windows.

I then go to login as the user I have just created, and I can login. Under
control panel users, the user is listed as a guest - HMM XP Home failing to
find the other user Groups assigned it to the Guest group?

I logoff, and logon as an administrator, go to control panel - and the user
i created does not exist there. Run "control userpasswords2" and the user is
not listed there also.

You can still login as the user, but it is not listed in any user lists in
XP home.

How can I delete this use account?

I have done this a few times on previous installs of XP on my PC.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove this user from the computer?

Would be interesting to hear how this happens, and why, and also how to sort
it out!?

Thanks

I have 2 computers with WinXP HE networked using Dial up with ICS (both are
connected to a hub). I can connect to the internet just fine with both
computers. Both computers can see each other. The Host computer can access
the Client computer files. But, even tho' the Client can see the Host, when
the Client trys to access the Host computer, I get an error message that it
is not accessible...may not have permission to use the resourse... access
denied. I can ping the Host from the Client. I have checked to share files.
I've reset up the whole system twice. Everything seems to be working fine
except I can't access the Host computer files from the Client. Have any
ideas???

Thanks!

Kass

I'm having trouble sharing files and accessing the printer on my home
network. All three computers have XP SP2. I use a Linksys WRK54G wireless
router. The base unit can share files with the two wireless units. The two
wireless units can share files with each other, but not with the base unit.
The wireless computers see the base unit on the network, but when I try to
reach the base unit I get this error message:

" COMPUTER_NAME is not accessible error message... you might not have
permission... logon failu the user has not been granted the requested
logon type at this computer."

I have granted Shared Permissions on the base unit.

Any solutions to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Hello all,

I have an AMD Athlon Xp 2200+ with an Asus A7V8X machine=20
and only one 100Gb HD. I've installed on this one disk=20
WinME, Win2k and WinXP. Until just recently I never had=20
any trouble booting any of those systems through multi-
boot.

But...

I have installed XP's sp2. Just after the installation it=20
rebooted fine. I had a message from Norton Internet=20
Security asking me if I wanted to keep my Firewall=20
settings and not use Microsoft's Firewall. I answered yes.=20
A little later I started Nero. A warning came, saying the=20
software wasn't compatible with sp2. I nvertheless ignored=20
the warning and opened Nero Burning Rom. Then I shut down=20
my computer.

Now I can't boot either XP or 2k.

Booting XP I get the following error code: stop 0x00000024=20
(0x00190203 0x83749310 0xC0000102 0x00000000). If I get=20
this right, this is a problem with ntfs.sys.

I can't boot the computer in any of the safe modes (with=20
command prompt, networking, etc.), nor in the last known=20
good configuration. I can't either run the recovery=20
console. When I try to run the console, computer freezes=20
after stating that it is checking my drive.

If I try Safe mode, the computer loads all the drivers up=20
to Mup.sys, then hangs.

And so the only system I can boot my computer with is=20
WinME. Since my Win2k and WinXP system drives and my data=20
drives are on NTFS I can't access them from WINME.

However, I have been able to boot my computer using a=20
bootable CD-Rom with Caldera DR-Dos 7.03 on it (with NTFS=20
support). And so I have been able to find out that all the=20
files are still on my ntfs drives. I have copied some of=20
them onto one of my FAT32 drive and found out that the=20
data was clean and without corruption.

I have also ran a set of disk tests available from my=20
manufacturer. My disk is fine.

I have read that this boot issue could be related to an=20
obsolete BIOS or certain kinds of Pentium CPUs (Prescott)=20
or AMD 64. This was obviously not my case. Still, I=20
flashed my Award Bios, ver. A7V8X ACPI 1006. Now I have=20
the latest version (1014).

But that didn't help at all, because the next step for=20
resolving the problem, according to Microsoft KB 873161,=20
is to rename update.sys in the system32/drivers.=20
Unfortunately, my Caldera DR-Dos only allows me to read=20
from my ntfs drives. I just can't write or delete any=20
file.=20

I also have read that you could have some problems booting=20
into safe mode if you had Nero InCD installed (in=20
particular the Incdrec.sys file). Indeed I do have this=20
file in my system32/drivers. But the problem seems to=20
concern only those who try Safe mode and who don't have=20
problems booting normal mode. Anyway I can't rename this=20
system driver either.

It seems I'm not the only one with these kind of problems=20
(see, e.g.:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1095734869

or

http://www.crn.com/sections/breaking...kingnews.jhtml
?articleId=3D23905071).

Some also recommend to go into the=20
$NtServicePackUninstall$spuninst, rename spuninst.txt to=20
spuninst.bat and run it to deinstall sp2. But again, I=20
can't rename any file onto my ntfs drives...

I haven't tried yet to repair or reinstall winxp, which=20
would be my last resort.

So here are my questions:

1) Is it possible to boot XP without loading certain=20
drivers (remember I can't delete them or rename them on my=20
NTFS system drives) since my boot sector is on a FAT32=20
drive ? Like is there a command line that can be put in=20
boot.ini ?=20

2) Is it possible to boot my computer and be able to=20
access my ntfs drives with permission to=20
modify/delete/rename/write, without going through recovery=20
console ?

3) Is there another way to run chkdsk than puting the disk=20
into slave mode into another computer or going through=20
recovery console ? (I'm far away from any other computer).

4) Is it possible only to repair or change ntfs.sys=20
without altering the data on the disk ?

5) Is there any utility, running on DOS or WIN-ME, that=20
can help me recover my ntfs drives ?

6) How come XP makes 2K unbootable ????

7) Could this bug be related to Norton Internet Security=20
or Nero burning rom ?

I'm trying not to despair. Please help me !!

Thanks to all.

Hey anyone, I tried to run error checking the other day
and the error message I got was that it couldn't access
the volume. Error checking completed. It appears the
volume is locked. Anyone had this problem?
.
I uninstalled za 5.0 and reinstalled za4.5 and error
checking worked fine. It could be the truevector engine

Each time I boot up I get an access denied drive C message from Norton. I have entirely uninstalled all software then reloaded with the same results. The problem occured after working with administrative tools under computer management. The Drive C is listed as a system drive. I dont remember it being that way before. Is this why I get the error message and how do I change the drive type? if that is what I need to do.

I am having problems downloading files (such as Real Player 10) into my
AdministratorLocal SettingsTemporary Internet FIlesContent.IE5 folder. I
receive the error message "Windows cannot access the specified deice, path,
or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I
am logged onto the Administrator account, and this supposedly comes with no
limitations on access priviliges. In addition, when I tried to find the
Local SettingsTIFContent.IE5 folder, I find that the Content.IE5 folder is
missing, and that I had to manually type the full path into Windows Explorer
to access the folder. In addition, the downloads seem to work when Windows is
in safe mode with networking, but not with normal startup. Can anyone help me
to resolve this problem? (I am using Windows XP Professional). Thanks!

Hi,

I using Access on an XP PC with the database residing on a Windows 2003
server. Whenever I open the database I get an error message that says "Some
files can harm your computer. If the file information below looks suspicious
or you do not fully trust the source do not open this file. " When I click
on open I get another security warning that says "This file may not be safe
if it contains code that was intended to harm your computer. Do you want to
open this file or cancel the operation".

I would like to find a way to turn both of these messages off so that a user
simply opens my database and gets right in rather than these security
warnings. Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks,

Chuck

I installed sp2 and after I did i could not access my
computer or control panel or seach keep getting
drwtsn32.exe error message. what is drwrsn32 and how can
I remove it or turn it off? if not do I need to use my
disk and repair mode?

I've been getting the following blue screen stop error in=20
Windows XP, but only while burning a DVD, or shortly=20
after burning a DVD:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL STOP: 0x0000000A (0x82844FF0,=20
0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8050D819)

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFDEFFDD7,=20
0x00000001, 0x80515FF4, 0x00000000)

and a few other variations.

This has been a problem with my last DVD Burner, as well=20
as my current one, so I know it's not a matter of=20
defective hardware. The drive is independantly the=20
master on the secondary chain, and I used the cable that=20
came with the drive. I've tested my RAM, and no errors=20
have been found. I reinstalled Windows XP, still to no=20
avail. I don't recall my DVD drive ever having this=20
error under windows 98 SE, but since that OS crashes so=20
frequently anyway, maybe I just never noticed it. My=20
motherboard, a FIC AZ11EA (VIA KT133A + 686B Chipset) has=20
been updated with the most recent Award BIOS available on=20
the fic website. I have an AMD Duron 1.00 GHz processor,=20
which for some reason always comes up under diagnostics=20
as a 1.33 GHz. I have 512 Megs of ram and a 160 GB hard=20
drive with 35 Gigs free.

I'm absolutely stumped. Can anyone suggest any solutions?

Error description: PC with XP Home-Edition cannot print to
a configured printer.

Error message (german GUI): 'Ausnahmecode 0xC0000094'

I know that this is a 'divide by zero' error.

It does not matter whether the printer is connected localy
(parallel port) or
is configured as a network printer if connected to another
machine in the network.

Details:
Let PC1, PC2 and S1 be machines with XP Home-Edition installed.
The printer OKI B4200 (PCL) is connected localy to server S1.
Printing to the OKI B4200 from S1 and from PC2 (via
network) is working without problems.

However, PC1 cannot print to this printer. The printer is
configured as network
printer at PC1 the same way it is configured on PC2.

Facts:
- The printer on S1 is shared to all machines in the LAN
- PC1 is able to access other network ressources like
drives on S1
== basic network connection is ok
- PC1 is able to print on network printers connected to S1
which are different from the OKI B4200
== general printing machinery on PC1 is OK
PC1 has only problems with printing to this particular
printer.
- It does not help to delete the printer configuration on
PC1 and configure them again.
== I suppose that the printer drivers installed on PC1
are ok
- Any access from PC1 to the printer OKI B4200 yields an
error code 0xC0000094
E.g. the error message occurs if I click on the
'properties' tab of the printer.
- Other PCs (e.g. PC2) can print without problems to this
printer
== the printer has no defect
== the sharing on server S1 is correct (there is no
client specific sharing)
- If I connect the printer localy to PC1 I get the same
error message!!
I installed and deleted the drivers for several times.
Sometimes I got 'divide by zero' error even dring the
installation of the driver
== This is not a network problem.

1) can I somehow raise the log-level in the event logs to
get more output
2) can I trace the printer driver to find out what causes
the 0xC0000094 error code
3) Is it possible that I corrupted some system files at PC1?
If I connect some old printer (matrix printer) printing
is no problem on PC1
Only printing to the sophisticated OKI B4200 yields an
error code 0xC0000094

Perhaps some font database is corrupted that is only
consulted when printing to the OKI B4200
and is not needed when printing to an old matrix printer.

I get an error message trying to run check disk: cannot
open volumn for direct access. I can't get it to run in
safe mode either. I keep crashing. How can I open volumn
for direct access? How can I find out what is preventing
check disk to get into the C drive? It won't even work at
start up in safe mode... could you please send help to

I am trying to network two computers at home, both have XP HOME. The first
computer is working fine - it can see the 'shared' files in its directories
and shared files on the second computer. The problem is that the second
computer cannot gain 'access' to the network. I get an error message
saying that it does not have
permission. It recognizes that there is a network but it cannot gain
access - even to its own shared directories. I turned off Microsoft
Internet Firewall and it solved the problem for the first computer but not
the second. I am using BlackIce and have the same settings on both
computers. Both computers feed into a Netgear router. Any ideas would be
welcomed.

Thanks for the suggestion Brian,
ISP couldn't help last time I spoke with them - the loss
of functionality appears to be directly linked to the
upgrade to XP. Error message when send/receiving is
along the lines of 'can't find server check you have
identified the correct server name'

Hello Gary,

Call your ISP and ask them to help you with your
problem. Also, what error messeges are you getting?

Thanks.

Upgraded from 2000 prof. to XP prof. All successful
except can't connect to the internet via ADSL or dial-
up.
Modem and ethernet cards say they are working properly.
Both connections open successfully when I enable them.
Error messages in IE and OE say that I am not connected
to the internet.
Other computers connected to the same ADSL router still
function normally and access the internet OK.
All antivirus software and firewalls disabled and then
uninstalled. The XP firewall is also disabled.
Have run out of ideas.
Help!

When I try to access the Device Manager by:

System Properties: Hardwa Device Manager

I get this error message:

Snap-in failed to initialize,
Nameevice Manager
CLSID:{74246BFC-4C96-11D0-ABEF-0020AF6B0B7A}28/Mar/2005 23:57

I click OK, and the following screen appears:

Device Manager [Title]

X Snap-inCreation Failed.

The snap-in is not created; it may not be installed properly.

Nameevice Manager
CLSID:{74246BFC-4C96-11D0-ABEF-0020AF6B0B7A}

What do I need to do about this?
